Arnold (Arnie) Hinseth, 100, of Sioux Falls, SD, previously of Irene, SD, passed away at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Funeral Service will be held at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls on Friday, September 6, 2024 beginning at 1:00PM. Visitation with family present will begin at 11:00AM.
Arnie was born on July 5, 1924, to Ole and Emma (Lee) Hinseth on the family homestead farm west of Irene, SD. He farmed with the family until 1944.
He joined the army on August 29, 1944. He spent his time in the service in the Rhineland Campaign and the Central Europe Campaign, where he was a POW and earned the Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle-Eastern Ribbon, and two Bronze Battle Stars. He was honorably discharged on October 16, 1945. He was honored to go on the Midwest Honor Flight on September 18, 2021, with grandson, Dan. This was the first time he had been on a plane since Basic Training. This time he got to fly first class, just a bit of an upgrade from the first flight.
He married the love of his life, Delores Jensen, on January 14, 1948. They were blessed with one daughter, Laurel, in 1951. They farmed in the Irene, SD area until 2003, when they moved to Sioux Falls, SD, to be closer to Laurel and her family.
Arnie lived an amazing life. He always worried about other people before himself and always had a ‘can do’ attitude. His smile and laugh were infectious. He was always willing to lend a helping hand. He loved to tinker and fix things. There wasn’t an engine he couldn’t fix. He wasn’t afraid to remind family that his driver’s license didn’t expire until he turned 101. He often wheeled himself around the Good Samaritan Village to talk to friends he had made there or to sit outside to enjoy the weather, and seldom allowed anyone to push him in his wheelchair.
He will be greatly missed by his daughter, Laurel Luke, and her husband, Jim, grandson Dan Luke and wife Becky, great-grandchildren Alex Luke and girlfriend Rachel Landmark, Elizabeth Luke and boyfriend Tristin Atack. Also surviving are brother Elton and his wife Sharron, sister-in-law Shirley Jensen, and brother-in-law Roger Jensen and his wife, Phyllis, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Arnie was preceded in death by his wife Delores, his parents, sisters Madeline and Florence, and brothers Sidney, Sylvan, and Olin and his wife Ardys.
In lieu of flowers, Arnie’s family requests you send any donations to Midwest Honor Flight or St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Arnie’s family thanks the staff at Good Samaritan Village for the wonderful care you’ve given him during his stay. Your friendship and compassion meant the world to him!
