Barbara Ellen Christensen

Barbara Ellen Christensen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, formerly of Volin and Yankton, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2025, at the age of 96.

Barbara was born on October 14, 1928, in Covina, California, to James Marion and Verna Alyce (Steinpfad) Mount. She graduated from Chino High School in 1946, where she was active in several school activities, including athletics. She also attended Chaffey College, where she studied journalism.

On March 27, 1949, Barbara married Thomas Christensen in Pomona, California. Together, they moved to Volin, South Dakota, where they built a life on the family farm and raised four children: Thomas (Sharon Sherman), Jeffrey, Ellen (Jack Glidden), and Diane (Michael Bohlmann). She worked at Gurney Seed and Nursery in Yankton, South Dakota, and later as an office manager for Clay Union Electric in Vermillion, South Dakota, until 1985.

Barbara had a passion for spending time with family, especially enjoying card games, working on puzzles, and sewing handmade blankets to welcome each new grandchild. She also made blankets for many family friends. Her family looked forward each Christmas to the special calendar she created. She was known for her quick wit, sharp memory, competitive spirit, and generous heart.

Barbara is survived by her four children, nine grandchildren, and twenty great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense pride and joy. She is also survived by nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Thomas; three brothers, James, Everett, and Raymond; her son-in-law, Michael Bohlmann; and an infant grandson, Joseph Glidden.

She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and strength that will live on in the hearts of her family and all who knew her.
