Meckling

Dorene Delores Becker passed away March 22, 2024 after a brief illness.
Born June 4, 1936 on the family farm near Lesterville SD, she was the oldest of four children born to Peter Anton Orth and Alta Anna (Magstadt) Orth. She was baptized and confirmed at Petersburg Congregational Church rural Lesterville. She attended Northstar Country School in rural Lesterville and graduated from Scotland High School in 1955. Growing up she learned the value of hard work on the family farm. After graduation she moved to Yankton and worked for the Yankton County ASCS Office. She met Marlin Becker who had returned home to the Nebraska area after serving in the Korean War. They married June 25, 1960, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton SD. In March 1961 they moved to rural Meckling to be a farmhand for Carl Olson, where they raised their family. Dorene delighted in being a farmer’s wife, mother, and homemaker. She relished her weekly Tuesday night out bowling league, bowling for the Farmers Elevator team for many years. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and peddled many a poppy in her time. Her summers were spent gardening, canning and helping with 4-H projects. For many years the family raised chicks, sold eggs and dressed chickens. They also raised cattle until Marlin's retirement, buying their first herd from her father when he retired. As the kids grew older she returned to work, starting with Clay Rural Water when they first opened at the extension office. She then returned to work at the ASCS Office for Clay County. After retirement she enjoyed helping with voting poles and bus trips with Marlin. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Vermillion.
Survivors include her children: sons; Tim Becker, Jeff (Jill) Becker all of Meckling, SD and her daughter; Julie Becker of Yankton, SD.
