Mabel Aune

February 7, 1925 — August 13, 2025

Vermillion

Mabel Nelson Aune, age 100 years and 6 months, went to Heaven on August 13, 2025 and joined her beloved husband Howard (March 2, 1996), son Richard (February 13, 2022), grandson Landon (May 21, 2014) and all her family and friends who preceded her to eternal peace.

Born near Lodi, South Dakota, on February 7, 1925, Mabel lived a life full of love, kindness, and unwavering dedication to her family. On August 10, 1940, she married the love of her life, Howard Aune, and together they created a home filled with warmth, love, and laughter.

Mabel was a cherished mother to Richard and Gloria (Larry Ahrendt), and she became a second mom to Larry; she was a proud Nana to Scott (Jaymi), Jamie (Erica), and Jason (Heather) Ahrendt, and Eddie Aune and Lise Marso; and a devoted Nana-Great to Haley (Ahrendt) Walker, Teigan Ahrendt, Landon Ahrendt, Gabrielle Ahrendt, Kendall Ahrendt, Lincoln Ahrendt, and Gavin Ahrendt. She was also a Great Nana-Great to Brody Walker. Her love for her family knew no bounds, and she made each person feel special in her own unique way.

There was nothing quite like a trip to visit Nana and Grandpa. Their home was always a place of joy and fun. Nana was a skilled cook. Her homemade donuts with chocolate frosting were a favorite treat, as were her Pizzelles, Kringla, Krumkaker, Rosettes, pork chops and pan-fried pheasant. She and Grandpa spent many years running a small-town cafe in Wakonda, SD. Her warmth and care filled every meal.

Mom had a talent for crocheting, creating beautifully vibrant afhgans that her family treasured. She loved doing crafts with Jeanette Mones and throughout her years made clowns, angels, The 3 Wise Men, Mary and baby Jesus.

Nana and Grandpa had a flourishing garden on Tom Street, a labor of love that flourished year after year. This green thumb was passed down to her grandson Jamie, who continues the gardening legacy with great pride.

Mabel was also known for her love of games, particularly cards, bingo, Rummifun and trips to WinnaVegas. Many evenings were spent with friends at the Eagle’s Club with Howard, where she became an expert player and shared laughter with all who joined her.

Mom’s life was one of service, love, and care for her family and friends. Throughout her 80’s she would take care of the “old people” who often were younger than she was. Her belief in and love for our Savior led her throughout her life as she volunteered with Trinity Lutheran, the Food Pantry, Civic Council and to help anyone anywhere she was needed.

Mabel will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her spirit will live on in the memories she created. While we mourn our loss, we take comfort in knowing that we will be reunited one day in Heaven, where she will be waiting with open arms.

Mabel leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and countless memories that will be cherished by her family and friends for generations to come.
