Ray D. Nielsen, age 94, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by love. Ray was born on June 23, 1931, and lived a life centered around family, hard work, community, and devotion to the people he loved most.
On February 11, 1950, Ray married the love of his life, Ardell Fokken. Together they shared 64 wonderful years of marriage, raising a large and loving family while building a life full of laughter, dancing, and cherished traditions.
Ray proudly served his country during the Korean War. Following his service, he worked in autobody repair until he was 85 alongside his son Jay, a job he took great pride in through the years.
Ray and Ardell were well known for enjoying nights spent following the Chaparelles band to dances, something they loved doing together throughout the years. Those who knew Ray knew he never missed a chance to dance.
One thing Ray became especially known for was making sure every grandchild got an ice cream cone. His love for family extended far beyond his own children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Altogether, Ray’s family grew to nearly 120 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren — each one loved deeply by him.
After Ardell’s passing, Ray continued one of her most beloved traditions by faithfully making her famous sugar cookies and sharing them with the people of Viborg. It was one of the many ways he kept her memory alive while continuing to care for the community that cared so much for him.
Ray is survived by his children: Rhonda Nielsen, wife of his late son David; Adell; Lori and Don; Stacey; Scott and Elisa; Jay and Dawn; Roxi; and Shawn and Tamie, along with his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, extended family members, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Ardell and his son David.
The family finds comfort knowing Ray is once again dancing with Ardell and reunited with his son David.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the people of Viborg for always looking after Ray and showing him such kindness throughout the years. A special thank you is also extended to Avera Health Home Hospice, his granddaughter Alexis, for helping make Grandpa’s transition more peaceful and comforting, and his daughter Roxi for moving in with him and ensuring he was able to spend the remainder of his years in the comfort of his home surrounded by family.
