Ronald Eugene Johnson, born on June 15, 1937, in Williston North Dakota, passed away on January 2, 2026, in Phoenix, Arizona due to injuries from a fall. He was 88 years old.
A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Ron spent the majority of his adult life settled in Yankton and then Vermillion South Dakota where he was a well-respected member of the banking industry and the community. His commitment, integrity and diligence were greatly valued by his colleagues, customers and peers alike.
Ron found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was a fan of "old" Country music, always looked forward to immersing himself in a good mystery novel, and was a passionate supporter of the University of South Dakota Coyote athletic teams. He was an avid golfer and cherished the time spent on the golf course, as much as he enjoyed socializing with friends and family. His outgoing, fun personality, kind heart and loving nature touched many lives and left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Ron is survived by his partner, Janet Hoff, Vermillion, SD; son, Mike (Laurie) Johnson, Sioux Falls, SD; daughter, Karen (John) Kruml, Union, KY; sister, Rita (Johnson) Farley, Austin, TX; brother, James Johnson, Williston, ND; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Faye Johnson; son, Gene Johnson; parents, Dorothy and Louis Johnson; and sister, Kay (Johnson) Westling.
Hansen Funeral Home of Vermillion, SD is assisting the family with arrangements. A celebration of Ron's life will be held at Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion on Friday, May 15, at 1 PM. Visitation will be from 11 AM until the time of service. A social gathering with the family will follow Ron's memorial service at The Eagles club in Vermillion.
Ron's legacy of kindness, dedication, and camaraderie will be remembered by all who knew him. His life exemplified the virtues of generosity, loyalty, and love, leaving an indelible mark on his community and family.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial to St. Agnes Catholic Church in Vermillion or USD Athletics.
