Shirley Ann Girard

Shirley Ann Holmes Girard passed away peacefully in her sleep, September 30, 2024, at the Wakonda Heritage Manor Avera, Wakonda, SD. 

Shirley was born March 5, 1936 in Vermillion, South Dakota to Lloyd R. and Mamie M. (Dean) Holmes. Shirley grew up in Vermillion, except during WWII the family was moved to Berkley, California for a few years; her father was needed for his welding expertise. Shirley graduated from Vermillion High School in 1954. After graduation she attended Nettleton Business College in Sioux Falls, SD.

Shirley married Arnold F. Girard, April 18, 1955 and made their home in Vermillion, South Dakota. She was a homemaker, CNA at Dakota Hospital, Typist at the Broadcaster Press and employed at USD Business Office for several years. Shirley enjoyed genealogy, gardening, fishing and crafts. Her expertise was decorating for the Holidays and changing of the seasons. She loved her dogs and bird watching. Shirley was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary and Past Auxiliary President and past member of the Mayflower Society. 

Shirley is survived by her children: Gregory (Jackie) Girard, Brenda (Gary) Dahlin, Cheryl Girard and Jill Girard. Grandchildren: James (Connie) Girard, John (Julie) Dahlin and Craig Dahlin. Her loving boxer dog, Bailey. Adopted grandchildren Josie Girard, Laura Girard, Katie Girard and Casey Girard. Great Grand Children: Emelia Dahlin and Colton Dahlin Sister in-law P.K. Holmes. Several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Arnold Girard; one grandson, Daniel; her parents, Lloyd & Mamie Holmes, in-laws Albert & Ida Girard; three sisters and three brothers. five nephews and one niece.

Funeral service will be 10:00 AM Friday, October 4 with visitation starting at 9:00 AM all at the Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion, with burial in the St. Agnes Calvary Cemetery in Vermillion. HansenFuneralHome.com.
