Stephen Joseph Kuchta

Wakonda, SD

Stephen Joseph Kuchta, 64, passed away unexpectedly on July 16, 2026.

Born on December 10, 1961, in Yankton, South Dakota, Stephen was the son of Norbert and Esther Kuchta. He was the third youngest of twelve children and grew up on the family farm near Menominee, Nebraska. Coming from a large Catholic family, Stephen was surrounded from an early age by the importance of faith, family, and community. Life on the farm taught him the value of hard work, perseverance, and the strong bonds that come from growing up with many brothers and sisters. Some of his fondest childhood memories were spent playing baseball with his siblings, creating lifelong memories, and strengthening the close relationships they shared.

On September 12th, 1980, Stephen married Kristina Rupiper, and together they welcomed two sons, Trent and Matthew. Although their marriage ended in divorce in 1989, they remained connected through the family they built together.

Later in life, Stephen and Beth Coulson welcomed two children, Shawn and Kylie. Stephen also helped raise Kristine Highland and Jacob Coulson, whom he loved and cared for as part of his family.

Stephen dedicated most of his working life to the tile-setting trade. He worked for large companies as well as independently, building a reputation as a true master of his craft. His attention to detail, skill, and pride in his work was evident in every project he completed. Stephen was not only a talented craftsman but also a teacher and mentor, sharing his knowledge and experience by training many others in the trade, including his sons, Trent and Matthew. Through his work and the skills, he passed on; Stephen left behind a lasting legacy.

Stephen had a deep appreciation for the outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, and camping, finding joy and peace in the time he spent outside. Whether enjoying nature, sharing stories around a campfire, or making memories with family and friends, the outdoors held a special place in his heart.

Stephen will be remembered by others for his strong work ethic, his dedication to his family, his craftsmanship, and the impact he had on the lives of those around him. His unexpected passing has left a profound sense of loss, but the lessons he taught, the memories he created, and the love he shared will continue through those who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his children: Trent Kuchta (Kristen) grandchildren Alek, Devin and Blake; Matthew Kuchta and grandchildren Jett and Estie; Shawn Coulson (Sydney Nielson) grandchildren Creedance and Shawn Jr.; Kylie Coulson (Craig Jensen) grandchildren Charlotte and McCoy; Kristine Eli (Daniel Eli) grandchildren Madie, Lilly, and William; and Jacob Coulson.

He is also survived by his siblings: Sandy Kuchta (Daniel) Delno Kuchta, Terrence Kuchta (Pamela deceased), Timothy Kuchta (Judy), Thomas Kuchta (LaDonna), Marietta Boatman (Curt), Carlene Barta (Daniel, deceased), Tony Kuchta (Julie), Julie Arens (Tim), and Brian Kuchta; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will cherish his memory.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Norbert, and Esther Kuchta; his brothers, Dean and Daniel; his nephew, Robert; his sister-in-law, Pamela (Terrence); his brother-in-law, Daniel (Carlene).

Though his life ended far too soon, Stephen's memory will live through the stories shared, the work he left behind, the skills he passed on, and the love he gave to his family.

The family welcomes all who knew and loved Stephen to join them in remembering and celebrating his life.
