Terry Bernard, (70) best known as “Smiley,” passed away on October 27, 2025, surrounded by his two daughters.
Terry was born on February 8, 1955, in Vermillion, South Dakota, to Gerald and Helen (Christopher) Bernard. One of ten children, he grew up in Vermillion, where he spent his life working hard, caring deeply for others, and sharing his humor and kindness with everyone he met. He attended Garryowen Country School, St. Agnes Catholic Elementary School, and Vermillion High School.
He was married to Janet Christensen for nearly 20 years, and together they raised their two daughters. Terry proudly worked for the City of Vermillion in the Water Department and was always willing to lend a hand with any project—especially plumbing, just like his dad. Prior to his years with the city, he worked for several years at Blake’s Plumbing and Swanson Heating and Cooling, where he honed his skills and built lasting friendships. Terry also served his community as a volunteer firefighter for 30 years, a role he took great pride in.
Terry loved the outdoors and could often be found hunting, fishing, tending his large garden, or cutting up deer during the season. His happiest moments were those spent with family and friends.
Terry is survived by his daughters, Carly O’Connor (Donny) and Jaime Drees (Michael); his beloved grandchildren, Payton, Joe, Haley, Kinze, and Wyatt; and his siblings, Chris, Jimmy, Ann, Ricky, Karen, Mary, and David.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Helen Bernard, and two siblings, Philip and Deb. A visitation will be held on Monday, November 3rd, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., followed by a service from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Vermillion. A private family burial will follow. A light lunch will be served at St. Agnes after the service, and a Celebration of Life will be held at The Varsity at 2:00 p.m. HansenFuneralHome.com.
Terry will be remembered for his big heart, contagious smile, strong work ethic, and the love he shared with all who knew him.
